Title: Compact Jazz Personnel: Sarah Vaughan (vocals) Recorded: Various Label: Verve Comments: "Sassy" Sarah Vaughan was quite simply one of the most impressive vocalists of the 20th century in any genre. In fact, it is widely agreed upon that had Sarah decided to pursue a career in opera, she would have rivaled the giants of her time. The control of her four octave range was just mind-boggling. And to consider the fact that she would rarely warm up is just even more incredible. A hard-drinking, swearing, ball-buster, musicians were just in awe of her talent and presence. This CD is a great introduction to her prolific career. |

Title: Billie, Ella, Lena, Sarah Personnel: Sarah Vaughan (vocals) Recorded:1958 Label: Sony/Columbia Comments: A wonderful compilation of the four Queens of Jazz, the tracks from 1950 of Sarah are exceptional small group recordings. Her classic recordings of "East of the Sun" and "Ain't Misbehavin'" are especially noteworthy for her all-star band, including Miles Davis. |
