Phineas Newborn, Jr.
(b. 12/14/31 - Whiteville, TN d. 5/26/89 - Memphis,TN)
Title: A World Of Piano Personnel: Phineas Newborn (piano), Louis Hayes, Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers, Sam Jones (bass), various others. Recorded: 1961 Label: Fantasy Comments: This man was simply a genius. His playing was crisp and clean, as his technical proficiency was unparalleled (with the exception, perhaps, of Art Tatum). Completely underrated during his lifetime, Phineas started and ended his career in Memphis, unfortunately suffering from mental instabilities that went undiagnosed for many years. Nonetheless, we are ultimately grateful for these documents that he was able to leave us. |

Title: We Three Personnel: Phineas Newborn (piano), Roy Haynes, (drums), Paul Chambers (bass). Recorded: 1958 Label: Fantasy Comments: This recording was Roy Haynes' first as a leader on an American label, and boy, is it still a classic. Roy leaves plenty of room for Phineas to do his thing, and this CD should not be missed! |

Title: The Newborn Touch Personnel: Phineas Newborn (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Frank Butler (drums). Recorded: 1964 Label: Contemporary Comments: This recording is Phineas' only recording of the 1963-68 period. His playing is still phenomenal; his remarkable control of the piano still unimpaired and similar to his recordings from the late '50s. As is usual on his Contemporary recordings, Phineas explores superior compositions, in this case interpreting a song apiece by Benny Carter, Russ Freeman, Hampton Hawes, Art Pepper, Ornette Coleman ("The Blessing"), Carl Perkins, Frank Rosolino, Leroy Vinnegar, Jimmy Woods and Barney Kessel. On this recording, he gives Oscar Peterson a run for his money! |
