Jackie McLean
(b. 5/17/32 - New York, NY      d. 3/31/06 - Hartford, CT)

Title: Destination Out!
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), Grachan Moncur III (trombone), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Larry Ridley (bass), Roy Haynes (drums).
Recorded: 1963
Label: Blue Note
Comments: Jackie McLean is one of the most important players in jazz. Straight from the post be-bop era of the late 50's, Jackie's sound is unmistakable. His lines are angular and biting, and his tone is usually sharp, some would say out of tune. These three CD's from the 60's are classics, representing some of the best music from that time. Jackie McLean still performs all over the world, in addition to chairing the jazz department at the Hart School of Music in Hartford, CT.
Title: Jackie's Bag
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), Tina Brooks and Billy Mitchell (tenor sax), Blue Mitchell and Donald Byrd (trumpet), Sonny Clark and Kenny Drew (piano), Philly Joe Jones and Art Taylor (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), Billy Higgins (drums).
Recorded: 1959 & 1960
Label: Blue Note
Comments: Jackie's Bag is split between two different recording sessions: the first, from January 1959, was the first session Jackie McLean ever led for Blue Note, and the second was a sextet date from September 1960 that featured tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks as a co-leader in all but name. According to the liner notes, McLean's first date produced only three songs of releasable quality, all of which are included here. Six tunes were cut at the Brooks session, all of which were issued in Japan as Street Singer and half of which appeared on the original Jackie's Bag LP; the CD reissue includes all six, making it the definitive word on both recording dates.
Title: Let Freedom Ring
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), Walter Davis, Jr. (piano), Herbie Lewis (bass), Billy Higgins (drums).
Recorded: 1962
Label: Blue Note
