Julian "Cannonball" Adderley
(b. 9/15/28 - Tampa, FL d. 8/8/75 - Gary, IN)
Title: Somethin' Else Personnel: Cannonball Adderley (Alto Saxophone), Miles Davis (Trumpet), Hank Jones (piano), Sam Jones (bass), Art Blakey (drums) Recorded: 1958 Label: Blue Note Comments: Although Adderley got his start in the great Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-50's, Miles returns the favor as a rare sideman on this Cannonball classic release. Their version of "Love For Sale" (second selection), is the definition of "swinging." Check out the feel that Sam Jones and Art Blakey create...it's truly "Somethin' Else!" |

Title: Nippon Soul Personnel: Cannonball Adderley (Alto Saxophone), Nat Adderley (Cornet), Yuseff Lateef (flute and tenor sax), Joe Zawinul (piano), Sam Jones (bass), Louis Hayes (drums). Recorded: 7/14 & 7/15, 1963 in Tokyo Comments: This live recording documents the terrific energy of this great band, especially on the burning second selection, "Easy To Love." Louis Hayes' drumming is just incredible. |

Title: Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Personnel: Cannonball Adderly (Alto Saxophone), Nat Adderley (Cornet), Joe Zawinul (piano), Sam Jones (bass), Louis Hayes (drums). Recorded: 1966 Label: Blue Note Comments: This band, with Zawinul replacing Bobby Timmons on piano, had a much larger audience. The pianist's hit song, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," launched the band into the mainstream, where they played large venues in Japan and Europe. Nevertheless, Cannonball never strayed far from his soulful background, and consequently, this music is just as vibrant and unique as his earlier recordings. |
